KENNESAW, Ga. – Sophomore Fermin Calvo Barcelo won his singles match to clinch a 4-2 victory for the Kennesaw State men's tennis team Thursday over visiting Jacksonville State.
 
Seniors Simon Pritchard and Lucas de Torres Curth each won in both singles and doubles to help pace the Owls, who improved to 3-4 overall and have won three of their last four matches. JSU fell to 6-3.
 
"We've been playing well, but we've had trouble closing matches," said Director of Tennis Eduardo Rincon. "I feel like this win, over a good Jacksonville State team, is a step in the right direction. We competed hard from start to finish, and I'm pleased with that."
 
With the Owls leading the match 3-2 and just two singles matches remaining, Calvo Barcelo rallied to close out Paolo Cucalon, 7-6, 6-4, at No. 3 and put the victory on ice. The sophomore pulled out the first set in a tiebreaker, then rallied to win the second set after trailing early.
 
"That's a huge win for Fermin to clinch the match," said Rincon. "He had to come from behind in the second set against a good player, and this result will help him develop as the leader we need on the court."
 
At No. 1, Pritchard made quick work of Jaryd Reese, 6-3, 6-4, while de Torres Curth knocked off Felix Morck, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, at No. 4. The senior tandem also paired up in doubles for a 6-0 win over Reese and Austin McCormick.
 
The Owls clinched the doubles point thanks to David Durham's and Sam Slade's 6-2 win over Mathias Chaim and Andres Gomez.
 
The Owls are back in action Saturday, March 4 at Georgia Southern. The match begins at 12 p.m.
