KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State women's tennis team got singles wins from Jada Tijani and Aspen Jarrett, but visiting UAB claimed a 4-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at the Betty Siegel Courts on campus.
 
The wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles by freshmen teammates Jarrett and Tijani, respectively, gave the Owls a 2-1 edge in the match after the Blazers captured the doubles point.
 
But UAB won singles matches at No. 4 and No. 1, and clinched the victory at No. 2 when Marlene Herrmann held off a hard-charging Alexandra Mercado, 6-4, 6-4. After being down 5-0 in the second set, Mercado reeled off four straight games, but got no closer.
 
"After yesterday's match, and unique outcome playing late into the night, the girls came out today and competed hard," said Assistant Head Coach Miranda Foley. "Doubles was one or two points away from potentially going our way. What really helped us was Aspen and Jada getting the job done on Courts 5 and 6 to get things going in our favor. After that, it really came down to a few points here or there. Alex (Mercado) did a fantastic job to keep us alive and give us a chance against a talented UAB team. I feel like we're in a good place, and improving, and we've got to be ready to go tomorrow."
 
Jarret and Tijani cruised to straight-set wins as Jarrett took down Taylor Factor, 6-1, 6-0. It was the same score for Tijani in her win over Natalie Voss.
 
Jarrett was also victorious in her doubles match with junior Kennedy Craig, as the duo beat Factor and Voss, 6-2.
 
The Owls remain home Monday to welcome UNC Asheville. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
