LIHU'E, Kaua'i – The No. 25 ranked Kennesaw State men's golf team opened its spring schedule with a steady even-par 289 and is in sixth place after the first round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate that opened Wednesday (Feb. 15) at the par-72, 6,991-yard Wailua Golf Course in Lihu'e, Kaua'i.
Three Owls –
Pablo Rodriguez-Tabernero Torres,
Christopher Guglielmo and
Teremoana Beaucousin – carded rounds of 72 and are tied for 23rd.
Fourth-ranked Virginia (268, -20) leads the 18-team field that includes seven teams ranked in Golfstat's top 50. The Cavaliers hold an 8-shot lead over No. 18 Texas A&M (276, -12).
"Overall, it was not our best score today as we stumbled in the middle of the round," head coach
Bryant Odom said. "However, the team's resilient finish will hopefully give us some momentum for tomorrow. We are still in position for a very nice finish if we can put together two solid rounds."
Sophomore
Jake Fendt posted a 1-over par 73, while junior
Paul Doig carded a 5-over par 77.
Virginia's Jimmy Stranger, No. 4 in the Golftstat rankings, turned in a course-record 10-under par 62 to take the individual lead, and has a four-shot lead over teammate Derek Bard and Arizona's Jordan Gumberg, who shot rounds of 6-under 66.
The tournament continues on Thursday with second-action beginning at 1:30 p.m. (ET). Live scoring is available at
