COLLEGE GROVE, Tenn. – Enduring difficult weather conditions, junior
Jake Fendt fired an even-par 72 and is tied for fourth place after Sunday's opening round of the FAMC Intercollegiate at The Grove in College Grove, Tenn.
Fendt's first round helped the Kennesaw State men's golf team to 13-over par 301 total and a fourth place standing at the 12-team tournament. The Owls are 14 shots behind Ole Miss (287, -1). Host Middle Tennessee (292, +4) is second and Georgia Tech (297, +9) sits in third place.
"Today's windy and rainy conditions made it very difficult for scoring," head coach
Bryant Odom said. "This golf course is already challenging on its own. We held it together and fourth place is pretty good considering we counted some big numbers on a few holes early in the round.
"This was the type of day where the round can get away from you and ruin the rest of the tournament," Odom added. "I am proud of how everyone stayed tough and fought until the end. With 36 more holes left we can still move up and make a run."
Fendt, who began the tournament leading the Owls with a 71.33 stroke average through two events, had a consistent round, parring each of his first nine holes, and recording two birdies and a pair of bogeys on his back nine.
"Jake continued his steady play and is contending again for a top finish," Odom said.
Redshirt junior
Wyatt Larkin posted a 3-over par 75 and is tied for 18th, while junior
Pablo Rodriguez-Tabernero Torres (76) is tied for 23rd. Freshman
Brady Keran (78) and sophomore
Connor Coffee (80) are tied for 45th and 47th, respectively.
The FAMC Intercollegiate at The Grove continues Monday with second-round action. The Owls will be paired with Cincinnati and will tee off from the first hole beginning at 10:20 a.m. (ET). All the play can be followed live on the Internet at
