STATESBORO, Ga. -- Junior
Fermin Calvo Barcelo won the singles title at the Georgia Southern Championship to punctuate a strong weekend for the Kennesaw State men's tennis team in Statesboro, Ga.
Â
Calvo Barcelo dropped just two sets in winning four straight matches to claim the singles crown. Freshman
Bryan Triana won four matches to capture the consolation singles bracket.
Â
The junior, who was a second-team All-ASUN selection last season as he set the Owls' single-season record for singles wins with 20, knocked off four straight opponents from Georgia Southern to claim the title. Calvo Barcelo won his first two matches in straight sets before dispatching Stefano Di Aloy 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 in the semifinals and JC Alcala 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 in the championship.
Â
"Fermin did a great job over the weekend against tough opponents," said director of tennis
Eduardo Rincon. "His goal for the fall was to win a championship and I'm glad it happened for him. Bryan also did a good job winning the consolation draw. He had a rough start but was able to bounce back and finished very strong today. As for the team, we need to use the upcoming off-season to work on our games, fitness and especially our mental toughness. With the spring season around the corner, what we do from here until our first match will determine how we do in the spring."
Â
Triana rebounded from dropping his opening match in the main singles draw to win four straight in the consolation bracket. The rookie from Miami, Fla., rolled in straight sets in his first three matches before taking down Luke Plaisted from UTC, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 in the finals.
Â
Also in the main singles draw,
Corey Smith,
Lucas de Torres Curth and
Manuel Castellanos won their first-round matches. Each of the Owls' four doubles teams won their first-round matches.
Austin Anderson and
Drew Lahey also reached the semifinals of the singles consolation draw, along with Triana.
The event capped the fall for the Owls, who will return to action when their spring season opens in late January.
