LOXLEY, Ala. – The Kennesaw State men's golf team ended its fall season on a high note, carding the low score of the day en route to finishing second at the 11-team Steelwood Collegiate Invitational that concluded Sunday at Steelwood Country Club in Loxley, Ala.
The Owls posted an even-par 288 to finish the 54-hole event at 3-over par 867 and finish one shot behind No. 1 Alabama, which captured the title with a 2-over par 866. Host South Alabama (879, +15) and No. 8 Kentucky (881, +17) finished third and fourth, respectively.
"We gave it our absolute best effort today but just fell short," head coach
Bryant Odom said. "Playing alongside top-ranked Alabama and No. 8 Kentucky was a great test for us and we proved ourselves once again.
"The wind was blustery and cold and the course was set up with very difficult hole locations that made today a test of skill and patience," Odom added. "We end this fall season with our heads held high and a boost of confidence. Congrats to Pablo (Rodriguez-Tabernero Torres) for a second straight runner-up finish in this event, and Jake (Fendt) and Wyatt (Larkin) for top 10 finishes."
Torres carded rounds of 73-69-70 for a 4-under par 212 to tie for second, two shots behind UAB's R.J. Keur, who claimed individual medalist honors with a 6-under 210 total. Larkin (214, -2) placed sixth, while Fendt (217, +1) tied for seventh, his fourth top-10 showing in five events this fall.
Freshman
Brady Keran (228, +10) tied for 29th, while sophomore
Connor Coffee (230, +12) tied for 36th.
Kennesaw State, which finished its fall with three top three finishes, is off until Feb. 12 when it opens its spring schedule at the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate at the Magnolia Grove – Crossings Course in Mobile, Ala.
