2017 ASUN All-Conference Team (PDF)

KENNESAW, Ga. – Senior defender Abby Roth led a group of three Kennesaw State individuals who were named to the 2017 ASUN Conference Women's Soccer All-Conference team that was announced by the conference office on Wednesday (Oct. 25).

Joining Roth, who earned first-team all-conference accolades, were senior midfielder Ashtah Das (second team) and goalkeeper Tiffany Sornpao, who was a unanimous selection to the all-freshman team.

Roth becomes the first Owl selected to the first team since Hannah Churchill earned the honor in 2015.

Lipscomb senior midfielder Ellen Lundy was tabbed Player of the Year, while the Bisons' Kevin O'Brien was a unanimous pick as Coach of the Year. Florida Gulf Coast, which led all teams with 11 honorees, including six first team selections, had the Defensive Player of the Year (Ashley Parks) and Goalkeeper of the Year (Melissa Wreck). North Florida's Thais Reiss was voted Freshman of the Year.

"I am very proud of Abby, Ashtah and Tiffany for receiving this recognition," head coach Benji Walton said. "All three players played important roles for our team both on and off the field. It is the ultimate compliment when the other coaches in the conference recognize your game and acknowledge you with all-conference team awards. I am thrilled for these student-athletes."

With her selection to the first team, Roth becomes a three-time all-conference performer after earning all-freshman team accolades in 2014 and second team honors in 2016. Das and Sornpao are first time honorees.

Roth has had a strong season in the backfield, totaling seven points, scoring three goals and collecting an assist. She was twice named ASUN Defensive Player of the Week.

"Abby has been the heart of our team and has grown a lot as a defender over the past two years," Walton said. "I thought she came in this year more poised and confident than I had seen her before. Her leadership, passion and communication carried our team this year. I believe she has been one of the top defenders in the league this year and her selection to the first team is validation."

Das has been one of the top scorers in the ASUN Conference during 2017, tying for eighth in the conference with four goals and leading the Owls with 10 points.

"I am so proud for Ashtah. She is a player who has battled injuries throughout her career," Walton said. "Her sole focus this past offseason was to make her senior year count. I think even if she had not received this recognition you could argue that she has more than reached that goal. She lined up at four or five different positions for us and made a huge impact at every spot, doing it with no complaints while putting the best interests of the team first. I am extremely happy that she has received this conference honor, and so amazingly proud of the leader and person she has become."

After redshirting during the 2016 season, Sornpao has had an impressive debut for the Owls, starting 12 games and registering a 5-5-2 record. She has a 1.17 goals-against average and has totaled six shutouts that tie for second in the ASUN Conference.

"Tiffany is another awesome story for our team. She redshirted last year and came back with purpose," Walton said. "I don't think I have ever seen a player make such a transformation on the field as Tiffany has this year. She went from a young timid keeper to a dominant player by putting in the work behind the scenes to get it done. Her confidence grew and it showed on the field. I think she may have single handedly won a few games for us this year. I am proud for Tiff and hope she continues to build off this success."

The Owls open ASUN Conference Championship play on Sunday (Oct. 29) when they host North Florida in a quarterfinal match at Fifth Third Bank Stadium. Kickoff is 1 p.m. (ET) and admission is free. The contest will also be streamed on Facebook Live.
