KENNESAW, Ga. – After a slow start, No. 48 Kennesaw State made a charge on the back nine during Tuesday's final round only to fall one shot short and tie for second place in the 11-team Pinetree Intercollegiate that was held at Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw.
The Owls posted the low round of the day, carding a 4-over 292 to finish at 8-over par 584 and tie Wisconsin in an event that was cut to 36 holes due to rainy weather on Monday. Southern Illinois captured the team title with a 7-over par 583 total.
"I'm proud of the effort today as we finished with the lowest round of the day and made a run at the title," head coach
Bryant Odom said. "It definitely stings getting beat by a shot, especially on our home course. This is something we will reflect on and learn from.
"We have a quick turnaround before heading to Mobile where we won last year," Odom added. "Hopefully, we can find some redemption for this runner-up finish today. Jake (Fendt) and Wyatt (Larkin) continued their momentum from the previous event with top five finishes and hats off to Brady (Keran) for a respectable top 20.
Kennesaw State shot 8-over par on its opening nine holes before rallying to post a 4-under par score on its closing nine.
Fendt produced a final-round 2-under par 70 to conclude play at 3-under par 141 and tie Wisconsin's Sam Anderson for second place. Larkin closed with an even-par 72 to finish at 1-under par 143 and place fourth.
Southern Illinois' Peyton Wilhoit captured individual medalist honors with a 7-under total of 137.
