KENNESAW, Ga. – Juniors Jake Fendt and Wyatt Larkin each carded 1-under par scores of 71 to lead Kennesaw State during the first day of the Pinetree Intercollegiate that opened Monday at Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw.

Fendt and Larkin's performance helped the Owls to an opening round score of 4-over par 292 that has them in fifth place, five shots behind Southern Illinois and Western Kentucky, who share the team lead at 1-under par 287. Mercer (288, E) and Wisconsin (289, +1) are third and fourth, respectively.

"Today was a challenging round with blustery winds and fast greens. Although we are in fifth, we are only five shots back and within striking distance heading into the final round," head coach Bryant Odom said. "Jake and Wyatt paced us and we had solid play from Pablo (Rodriguez-Tabernero Torres) and Brady (Keran). Tomorrow we will be motivated to put together a solid round and defend our course and last year's tournament title."

Fendt and Larkin are tied for eighth, five shots behind Southern Illinois' Peyton Wilhoit, who leads the field at 6-under par 66 and holds a three-shot advantage over Gonzaga's David Ganz and Billy Tom Sargent of Western Kentucky. Both players shot 3-under par 69s.

Torres and freshman Brady Keran posted 3-over par 75s and are tied for 26th, while sophomore Connor Coffee opened with a 79, and is tied for 51st.

Senior Paul Doig (74) is tied for 20th to lead a group of three Owls who are competing as individuals. Senior Buster Bruton (78) and junior Adam Morris (79) are tied for 45th and 51st, respectively.

The Pinetree Intercollegiate, shortened to 36 holes following heavy early-morning rain on Monday, concludes on Tuesday. The Owls will be grouped with Northern Illinois and Wisconsin, and will tee off on the first hole beginning at 8 a.m. All the action can be followed live on the Internet at www.golfstatresults.com.
