KENNESAW, Ga. – Year two of the
Agnus Berenato Era officially got underway on Monday as the Kennesaw State women's basketball team opened practice in preparation for the 2017-18 season.
Berenato, who is beginning her 31st season as a Division I head coach, put the Owls through a two and a half hour workout as the team prepares for its season opener November 10 at Clemson.
"I think the first day was great. I like this team and its chemistry and emotion," Berenato said. "We are a very young team but I think Clara (Young) has done a great job bringing leadership to the court.
"Because we're young, I think you saw from frustrations as the first day is always jittery and people are still trying to figure things out," Berenato added. "We haven't talked plays or anything, and that was the first time we've had all 10 women players able to play and go five-on-five, so that was exciting."
Kennesaw State returns four letter winners, including one starter from last year's team that posted a 10-20 record and advanced to the semifinals of the ASUN Conference Championship tournament. Guard
Clara Young returns as the Owls' lone senior, while
Carlotta Gianolla is back for her sophomore season after earning ASUN Conference Freshman of the Year honors.
Berenato is welcoming seven newcomers to the roster, including freshman guard
Kamiyah Street (Atlanta, Ga. / Mays HS), who is a two-time
Atlanta Journal-Constitution 6A State Player of the Year.
"I think the big thing that I would like to get out of the first week is to convey the pace that I want to go. I think we have more athletes this year to go with that pace, which is to get the rebound, get the outlet, run, and get the score. It's going to take time because we have post players playing the guard spot and they are going to have to be the outlet. That is something that I don't know if we will get in the first week, but that is one area we will be working on."
Kennesaw State makes its season debut on November 5 when it hosts Thomas University in an exhibition at the KSU Convocation Center beginning at 2 p.m. (ET). The Owls play their regular-season home opener on November 30 whey welcome Georgia State for a 7 p.m. (ET) contest.
