ATLANTA -- Junior Fermin Calvo Barcelo made a run to the Round of 16 to highlight the weekend for the Kennesaw State men's tennis team at the ITA Southeast Regional, hosted by Georgia Tech.
 
Calvo Barcelo went 2-1 in singles action, including a win over the tournament's No. 2-seed and the nation's 23^rd-ranked player. In doubles, he teamed with Lucas de Torres Curth for a first-round victory. The Owls had two other doubles teams in action, while de Torres Curth and Bryan Triana won their matches in the singles qualifier draw.
 
"Fermin had a good run and upset the 23^rd-ranked player nationally," said director of tennis Eduardo Rincon. "We're fortunate to be in what's arguably one of the toughest regions in the nation. I feel like we got better as a team just by being there. We will have two weeks before our last tournament and I look forward to going back to the courts and work on some specific areas that need to be improved before we compete again."
 
In the first round of singles, Calvo Barcelo defeated Jakub Wojcik of USF by rallying from a set down to win 6-7, 6-2, 7-5. He staged another comeback against UCF's Korey Lovett, dropping the first set against the NCAA's 23^rd-ranked player 4-6, but pulling out the next two sets 6-5 and 6-2 to advance. The junior's run in the bracket was halted in the Round of 16 by Florida State's Alex Knaff, 6-1, 6-0.
 
In doubles, Calvo Barcelo and de Torres Curth knocked off Stetson's Bradshaw and Shrob, 8-5 in the first round, but fell in the second round to USF's Golden and Wojcik, 8-0.

The tournament continues Monday at Georgia Tech.
 
The Owls have one final event this fall, Oct. 27-29 at the Georgia Southern Invitational in Statesboro.
