10/11/2017 9:10:00 AM

MACON, Ga. -- The Kennesaw State men's and women's tennis teams had strong showing at the Mercer Gridiron Classic this past weekend in Macon. Fermin Calvo Barcelo reached the championship match of his singles draw, while Harrison Wood and Corey Smith won their doubles flight. Jessica Cantrell and Brenna Reilly each won their consolation singles draw.

Calvo Barcelo's championship match versus Mercer's Sam Philp was postponed due to rain, but the junior from Mar del Plata, Argentina, rolled to the championship match by dropping just one set in four matches. He knocked off the draw's No. 1-seed, Mercer's Oliver Stuart, to reach the championship.

Drew Lahey also had a strong run in his singles draw, advancing to the semifinals before falling to top-seeded Santiago Suarez from Georgia Southern. Harrison Wood reached the quarterfinals in his draw.

In doubles, Wood and Smith rolled to the championship in their bracket by dropping just 12 games in four matches. The duo dispatched Agost and Blanchard from Jacksonville State, 6-2, in the championship match.

The Owls combined for a 10-6 record in singles play, while going 5-2 in doubles action.

On the women's side, Cantrell bounced back from a first-round loss in the main draw to win her consolation bracket with five consecutive wins. Reilly followed suit in her consolation bracket, also winning five matches in her consolation bracket following first-round setback.

In doubles action, Reilly teamed with Jada Tijani to reach the semifinals of the main draw with a pair of victories.

The teams are back in action with the ITA Regionals over the next week at Georgia Tech (men) and Georgia (women).
