COLLEGE GROVE, Tenn. – A complete team effort led by junior
Pablo Rodriguez-Tabernero Torres contributed to a 6-under par 282 final round score that helped Kennesaw State tie for third place at the 12-team FAMC Intercollegiate at The Grove that concluded Tuesday at the par-72, 7,368-yard The Grove Golf Club in College Grove, Tenn.
Torres shot a 3-under par 69 to lead a group of four Owls who posted under-par scores on the final day, helping Kennesaw State finish the 54-hole event with a 10-over par 874 score and tie host Middle Tennessee. Georgia Tech captured the team title with a 12-under 852 total to finish eight shots in front of Ole Miss (860, -4).
The Owls, who began the day in sixth place, turned in the second-lowest round of the day and lowest 18-hole total in nine rounds this season.
"Today was the round we've been waiting on as we finally capitalized on our recent play," head coach
Bryant Odom said. "Through two rounds we were leading the tournament in pars by 12, and were last in birdies. We were playing solid golf but not quite scoring as well as we should.
"Our goal today was to stay patient and continue making the same decisions and trust the preparation we've put in," Odom added. "The guys were rewarded with the second-lowest round of the day and a vault into a tie for third. We led the field in pars (182) by 17 and tied for seventh (36) in birdies."
For the third consecutive tournament, junior
Jake Fendt led Kennesaw State as he tied for seventh place at 1-under 215 after posting scores of 72-72-71. Torres turned in his first top 20 finish of the season, placing 11th at 1-over par 217.
Redshirt junior
Wyatt Larkin ended on a high note, carding a final round 1-under par 71 to finish the tournament at 4-over par 220 and tie for 17th. Freshman
Brady Keran record a career-best 1-under par 71 to conclude play at 6-over par 222 and tie for 26th, while sophomore
Connor Coffee tied for 39th with a 13-over par 229 total.
Braden Thornberry of Ole Miss claimed the individual title, finishing at 7-under par 209 to record one-shot victory over Liberty's Mickey DeMorat (210, -6).
"We will enjoy a week off and prepare to defend our nest at the Pinetree Intercollegiate in two weeks," Odom said.
Kennesaw State is next in action Oct. 23 when it opens play as the defending champion of the Pinetree Intercollegiate that will be held at nearby Pinetree Country Club.
