KENNESAW, Ga. – A slow start was too much to overcome for the Kennesaw State women's basketball team as the Owls fell 78-49 to Wofford Monday (Jan. 2) afternoon at the KSU Convocation Center.
Â
Senior guard
Aareon Smith led the Owls (1-12) with 10 points, while junior forward
Katie Polinsky contributed career-high totals of six points and five rebounds, and sophomore
Alexandra Landby set career highs with three points and three rebounds.
Â
A combination of a hot-shooting Wofford (9-5) team and a tough shooting day by Kennesaw State set the tone early as the Terriers shot 61.1 percent (11-for-18) from the field in the first quarter and led 26-8 after the opening 10 minutes.
Â
Wofford finished the contest shooting 51.7 percent (31-for-60) from the field, while the Owls shot 26.8 percent for the game.
Â
"They (Wofford) came out and were ready to play, and had a beautiful stroke all day. We dug ourselves a hole early and we're just not able to overcome a start like that," head coach
Agnus Berenato said. "I'm happy that we were able to hang with them in the second half, and we finished the game outrebounding them and won the turnover category."
Â
Opening the second half with reserves on the floor, the Owls played the Terriers to a 31-28 score and outscored Wofford, 11-10, in the fourth quarter.
Â
"Our reserves came in and played really well. I thought their second and third effort was really tremendous," Berenato said.
Â
