Fendt's Record-Tying Day (Video)
FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Freshman
Jake Fendt carded a postseason school-record 5-under par 67 during Wednesday's final round of the 2016 NCAA Franklin Regional, but unfortunately for Kennesaw State, his effort was not enough as the Owls came up just short in their attempt to advance to the NCAA Championships.
Â
Fendt's performance helped Kennesaw State post a 3-under par 285 and complete the 54-hole event with a 17-under par total of 847 to place seventh, five shots behind No. 26 Virginia, which finished fifth at 22-under par 842, and earned the final berth to the NCAA finals.
Â
Second-ranked Texas claimed the team title with a 45-under par total of 819 to finish 11 shots ahead of host and No. 9 Vanderbilt (830, -34). Fifteenth-ranked LSU and No. 35 Houston tied for third at 25-unde r par 839.
Â
"As a team we got off to a slow start. We got something going in the middle of the round, but I don't think we ever got to the number," head coach
Bryant Odom said. We just didn't capitalize on 18. It just wasn't our day. We had our chance. The last few holes we had our chance and that's all we could ask for.
Â
"We were right in the hunt the entire week. We were on the number all three days," Odom added. "We had five guys playing very well. All we wanted was to be in it coming down the stretch and we were. It was a great learning experience. It hurts to be that close."
Â
Fendt, who tied for 33rd with a 1-under total of 215, highlighted the final round by establishing career-low 18-hole score and tying the KSU NCAA Regional for low round on a par-72. His round included six birdies and one bogey, including a 3-under 33 on the back nine.
Â
"I had a good round today. I struck my irons well today, I had a chip-in and had the putter going as well, and all-in-all I had really good day," Fendt said. "It was a good experience. As a team, all you can ask for is a chance going into the last round to make it into the top five and we did that.
Â
"We gave it our all today, but it wasn't enough. Overall, it was a great experience," Fendt added.
