FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Kennesaw State received sub-par rounds from juniors
Christopher Guglielmo and
Teremoana Beaucousin during Monday's opening round and is tied for third after 18 holes of the 2016 NCAA Franklin Regional that is being played at the par-72, 7,190-yard North Course at Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn.
Guglielmo, who is tied for eighth, carded a first-round total of 3-under par 69 and Beaucousin, who is tied for 15th, recorded a 2-under total of 70 to lead the Owls to a 5-under par score of 283 and a tie with No. 23 Washington.
Both teams trail No.2 Texas, which opened with a 20-under par 268, and second-place East Carolina, which posted a 9-under par round of 279.
"We got off to a great start. We were really hot through eight to 12 holes," head coach
Bryant Odom said. "The guys were really making a lot of puts and capitalizing on the holes. We didn't finish well. But that's okay, we're still in great position and right where we need to be for the rest of the tournament.
"Chris and Teremoana played really well today," Odom said. "Chris has been the steady guy all spring and picked up right where he left off so that was nice. He only had one bogey today and that was on 16. Teremoana has been getting better and better each week. He's battled off the tee but he is driving it well right now. If he is in the mix, we're going to be right there as well."
After having to scramble early in his round to save par, Guglielmo got on a great run and was working on a bogey-free round until recording a bogey on the par-3 16th.
"I got off to a pretty rough start today but finished pretty well. I got it going after six or seven holes," Guglielmo said. "I just had some jitters in me the first three or four holes just like everyone else does. I knocked the ball into the water on two, but managed to make par and that gave me some momentum.
"Towards the middle of the round, on nine, 10 and 11, I started to make some putts and that gave me more momentum," Guglielmo added. "I had a bogey coming in with a three-putt on 16, but overall, I had a pretty good day. I was pretty happy with the way I started."
Beaucousin's round included four birdies and two bogeys as he shot 1-under par on each side.
Sophomores
Fredrik Nilehn and
Wyatt Larkin are tied for 26th after shooting even-par 72s, while freshman
Jake Fendt opened with a 76 and is tied for 55th.
Doug Ghim of Texas leads the individual standings after carding an 8-under 68 and holds a one-shot lead over three players.
Round two gets underway at 9 a.m. (ET) with the Owls scheduled to tee off at 9:20 a.m. and will be grouped with Vanderbilt and Virginia. All the play can be followed live at
