Clara Aveling paced the Kennesaw State women's golf team as the Owls hold a four -stroke lead and four of the top- seven individual spots following the first round at the 2016 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship on a hot and humid Sunday (April 10) at the par-72, 6,100-yard Reunion Resort Watson Course.
"I am not go to lie, I am glad to be off the course and done for the day," said head coach
Rhyll Brinsmead. "We got off to a shaky start early. I knew we just had to be patient because the birdies would come once we got the speed of the greens figured out. I am actually really pleased with the position we are in right now given we did not play our best today. We counted a triple bogey ,from Dulcie, today which is so uncharacteristic of her. Overall, I am very happy.
The Owls carded a six-over par 294 to open the conference championship, with Aveling, leading all individuals after turning in the lone sub-par round on Sunday with a two-under par 70. The Linkebeek, Belgium native started her round with 10 straight pars before her lone bogey of the day. She quickly responded with the first of three birdies over her final six holes to grab the lead for good.
"I just kept my patience today,"
Clara Aveling said " I knew that my game was there but I just needed to hit it closer to make easy birdies which is what I did on the back nine. That first bogey gave me a spark and I told myself to play my game from there on and I did that."
Freshman
Medy Thavong is four strokes back of Aveling and sits in sixth place after a two-over par 74 in the first round. Thavong made 16 pars in her round including a streak of eight straight to close out her round.
Juniors
Laura Estefenn and Dulcie Sverdloff are five strokes off Aveling's lead and tied for seventh after posting a three over-par 75 in their first round. After going four-over par in her first nine holes, Sverdloff rebounded to shoot one-under par on the back nine with eight pars and a birdie. Estefenn made nine pars and three birdies in her opening round.
Charlotte Charrayre is tied for 10th after recording a four-over par 76 in her first A-Sun Championship appearance.
North Florida sits in second place with a 10-over par 298 in its opening round, while Florida Gulf Coast rounds out the top three with a 15-over par total of 303 on Sunday.
