BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Despite a strong effort on the mound from sophomore
AJ Moore, the Kennesaw State Owls dropped the series finale to the UAB Blazers at Regions Field on Sunday (March 6) afternoon, 2-1, in an 11-inning non-conference marathon in front of 475 fans.
Pitching was the story for the day as Kennesaw State's Moore, who entered the day with a 1-0 record and a 4.50 ERA, tossed a career-high 7.0 impressive innings. Moore, a sophomore right hander from Dacula, Georgia, allowed just two hits and one run (unearned) while striking out five Blazers throughout the day.
In his outing, Moore worked four 1-2-3 innings and faced a career-high 32 batters while recording 25 outs on 84 pitches. The righty tossed 65 percent of his pitches for strikes and retired 12 UAB batters in a row throughout the first four frames of the game.
On the other side of the mound, UAB countered with starting pitcher Adam Lamar and Austin Thomas combining for 7.1 IP, allowing just one run on eight hits. The two struck out four and walked just one before Dylan Mungar (1-0) –who earned the win—tossed the final 3.2 innings, allowing just three hits in a hard-fought game.
UAB scored the first run of the day in the bottom of the fifth, taking advantage of two KSU errors to plate an unearned run for a 1-0 lead.
The lead, in fact, remained true for the Blazers until the Owls finally broke through in the top half of the eighth frame, plating a run off three consecutive singles from
Austin Upshaw –who finished the game 1-for-6 with a run scored—,
Jeremy Howell and
Brennan Morgan (RBI) to tie the game at 1-1.
That scored continued to be true on the scoreboard until UAB hit a walk-off single to left field in the bottom half of the 11
th inning to break a 1-1 deadlock, and winning the series finale between the two clubs.
For the game, Howell led the offense going 3-for-4 at the dish for KSU.
Corey Greeson also chipped in two doubles, marking the second time in his career he has tallied two doubles in a single contest, and six other Owls recorded a hit on the day to outhit the Blazers 11-3 Sunday afternoon.
Up NextThe Owls will return to action on Tuesday (March 8) evening, trekking to Statesboro, Georgia to take on Georgia Southern in a mid-week non-conference tilt. The game is set to begin at 6 p.m. at JJ Clements Stadium. A year ago,
Chris Erwin tied a D-I school record of 15 strikeouts in a single game on the mound, helping the Owls take an 8-5 decision.

AJ Moore was very, very good today. He had a strong outing and we just couldn't manage to give him any runs. We need two runs to win the game and could not manage to strong that together. AJ pitched extremely well and his stuff was very sharp."
