DELAND, Fla. – Kennesaw State started strong by winning the doubles point but was unable to carry that momentum into singles place as it fell 4-3 to Stetson Thursday (Mar. 31) at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center in DeLand, Fla.
The No. 2 doubles tandem of
Laura Hopton and
Ashleigh De Wet, and the No. 3 doubles team of
Isabela Castro and
Gabriela Bueno helped the Owls (1-14, 0-2) score the first point of the match.
As singles play began,
Cristina Martin recorded a win at the No. 3 spot, defeating Isabella Fernandez to give KSU a 2-0 lead. However, Stetson (7-8, 3-0) captured wins at No. 5, No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 singles to clinch the victory.
Castro ended the match with a win at No. 4 singles, outlasting Maja Salibasic, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (13-11).
"This team is getting there little by little. Today was a tough one to swallow, but we fought right up to the end," assistant head coach
Miranda Foley said. "I'm proud of the way this team is coming together and continuing to support one another."
The Owls wrap up their Florida trip on Saturday (April 2) when they travel to Jacksonville to face North Florida in a match that begins at 10 a.m.
