KENNESAW, Ga. – Early missed scoring opportunities by Kennesaw State and a late-inning comeback by Stetson resulted in a 9-3 setback for the Owls during Saturday's Atlantic Sun Conference series finale at Bailey Park.
Kennesaw State (20-11, 4-2) led 3-0 and appeared in command until Stetson (24-16, 3-3) rallied for two unearned runs in the fifth, produced a clutch two-out hit in the sixth to take its first lead of the series, and broke open the game with a five-run seventh inning as it took advantage of four walks in the frame.
"It was a tale of two different stories today. We had chances to expand on our lead early in the game and we did not cash in those runs and that let Stetson stay in the game. If we had added a run in the second, third fourth inning, I think it is a different story," head coach
Tory Acheson said. "Yesterday, we made every single play and had some really exceptional plays. Today, we made a few mistakes and let them take advantage of it.
"All-in-All, I'm pleased. We won the series, got two out of three. If we can do that every weekend, obviously we're going to be in the hunt at the end year," Acheson added. "But, it's hard not to seal the deal today in a game that was going our way early. But you have to give Stetson credit. I knew they were going to come out and fight like crazy today, and they did."
Kennesaw State capitalized on a two-out first-inning walk to
Courtney Sutter, who was driven home a double to left field by
Missy Perkowski. The Owls added to their lead with two runs in the second as
Lauren Bennett single to plate a run and
Noelle Winkles produced a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead.
The score remained 3-0 until the fifth when Stetson took advantage of an error to open the inning and scored a twice on an infield single and error. The Hatters took their first lead with two out in the sixth inning on a single by Jazz Vasquez that gave the visitors a 4-3 lead, their first of the series.
The day was highlighted by another strong start from
Logan Viers, who allowed two hits and struck out three in four innings.
Kennesaw State returns to action on Tuesday (Mar. 29) when it travels to Alabama to take on Troy in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. (ET).
