KENNESAW, Ga. – Boston College rallied for two unearned runs in the sixth inning to break a scoreless tie and held on for a 2-0 victory over Kennesaw State at Bailey Park on Friday (Mar. 10).
The Eagles (14-9) took advantage of a pair of Kennesaw State miscues to score their runs and then survived the bottom of the sixth inning as the Owls (12-6) loaded the bases with one out. However, Allyson Frei, working her first inning of relief, was able to pitch out of the jam, and overcame a leadoff single by freshman
Kira Czyrklis in the bottom of the seventh to earn the save.
"I'm really proud of the kids. I thought they brought a high level of energy today," head coach
Tory Acheson said. "We worked on some things yesterday, and a lot of what we worked on I think we took a very definite positive step.
"I think if we can bring that same level of energy and those kinds of swings to the rest of our schedule we're going to have a lot more success," Acheson added. "So, I was not disappointed with that, but obviously you do not want to put all your mistake into a two-minute period and open the door for a good team. We played good softball today except for those couple of mistakes."
A throwing error on a fielder's choice play put a runner at a second base and fielding miscue set up runners at the corners with two outs. The Eagles then executed a double steal to score the game's first run. Jordan Chimento followed with a double to right field to drive home an insurance run against senior
Morgan Sikes (5-2).
"The pitching again was great. It was a very, very hard-luck loss for Morgan to lose a game and not give up an earned run," Acheson said. "We definitely want to build on the positives from it. We have a chance to have a good practice tomorrow and then, hopefully, we'll play some good ball up in Cookeville."
Junior
Logan Viers returned to the Bailey Park circle for the first time since pitching a perfect game against Alabama A&M on Feb. 28, and began where she left off in her previous outing. The Owls' right-hander retired the first 10 batters she faced before allowing a one-out single in the fourth inning.
Boston College starter Jessica Dreswick (6-3) was equally effective as she pitched five innings, allowed three hits and struck out one.
Viers worked into the fifth inning before being relieved by senior
Morgan Sikes, who entered the game with two outs and a runner on first base and needed just one pitch to record the final out.
In her 4 2/3 innings pitched, Viers allowed three hits and struck out two, while Sikes surrendered three hits, a walk and struck out three in 2 1/3 innings.
Junior
Chandler Griffin led the Kennesaw State offense as she recorded her first multiple-hit game of the season, with two of the Owls' five hits. Sophomore
Katie Cannington, senior
Kara Chambers and Czyrklis also collected hits.
Kennesaw State is next in action on Saturday (Mar. 12) when it faces Tennessee Tech and East Tennessee State in the Tennessee Round Robin beginning at noon (ET) in Cookeville, Tenn. The Owls will play the same two teams again on Sunday (Mar. 13).
