BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Kennesaw State women's tennis team opened its weekend with a 7-0 setback to Samford (2-1) at the Samford Tennis Center in Birmingham, Ala. on Saturday (Feb. 6).

Playing its third of seven consecutive road matches to open the season, the Owls (0-3) received solid efforts from sophomores Cristina Martin and Laura Hopton.

Playing at No. 1 singles, Martin extended Jessica Northcutt to three sets before falling 5-7, 6-0, 6-2. Hopton forced Ellie Gerlach to a third-set tie-breaker before succumbing, 6-7, 6-2, 11-9 at No. 4 singles.

"The score didn't really do this match justice. We played and competed hard and came up a little short," assistant head coach Miranda Foley said. "Overall, we improved and must continue to move in this direction."

Kennesaw State concludes its trip to Birmingham on Sunday (Feb. 7) when it meets UAB at the Samford Tennis Center beginning at 12 p.m. (ET).
