KENNESAW, Ga. – In a back-and-forth, see-saw offensive onslaught battle between host Kennesaw State and visiting Jacksonville State, the Owls (4-2) overcame nine runs and 11 hits from the Gamecocks (3-3) at Stillwell Stadium on Sunday (Feb. 28) afternoon to take a 11-9 victory.
With the win, KSU took the series and won 2-of-3 from JSU, marking the second consecutive season the Owls defeated the Gamecocks in a three-game series.
On the day, Kennesaw State produced 11 runs on 11 hits as eight different players recorded at least a hit in the rubber game. The Owls were paced by sophomore
Grant Williams (2-for-4, two RBI), senior
Brennan Morgan (1-for-3, three RBI),
David Chabut (2-for-4, two runs) and
Matt Mixon (2-for-4, two runs and an RBI).
Head coach
Mike Sansing also saw his club hit two more home runs as freshman
Jake Franklin hit his first collegiate home run and Morgan, who started behind the dish for the Owls, hit his second home run of the season.
Logan Hutchinson (1-0) earned the win on the bump, tossing 1.0 innings and allowed just one hit, while junior teammates
Richard Lovelady and Erich Stalh –who earned his third save of the season—held the Gamecocks scoreless over the final three innings of play.
The Owls produced three innings of crooked numbers on the right field scoreboard, plating a season-high five runs in the second, two runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to counter the Gamecocks' two four-run innings in the fifth and sixth.
Up NextThe Owls will return to action at Stillwell Stadium for a pair of non-conference mid-week affairs, welcoming Ohio University on Tuesday before hosting Charlotte on Wednesday. Both games will be scheduled to start at 5 p.m., as both games will be on A-Sun TV.
Sansing Quote"We jump out early and then they came back. It was a back-and-forth game and I was proud of our guys on how they kept battling. You can easily get frustrated in a game like this and everyone kept their composure. We had some really good at-bats throughout, but we have to do better in controlling those big innings and limit the damage. I thought it was a really good series. They are a really good team and well coached."
