Photo Gallery KENNESAW, GA. – The Kennesaw State Owls outscored visiting North Florida 41-23 in the second half to snap a two-game losing skid at the KSU Convocation Center, taking a 76-54 final in an Atlantic Sun Conference showdown on Monday (Feb. 15) evening in its final home game of the regular season.
Before 403 fans, the Owls honored
Jasmine McAllister and
Karly Frye on senior night. The two combined for 835 points, 662 rebounds, 215 assists, 67 steals and 64 blocks entering the night since the 2014-15 season.
For the night, both McAllister and Frye played a pivotal role in the victory. McAllister, a Memphis, Tennessee native, totaled her ninth double-double of the season with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Meanwhile, Frye, a Chuckey, Tennessee native, dished out five assists –helping the Owls total 14 assists, which fell five shy of a team-high this season. Kennesaw State also got key contributions from
Kelly Dulkoski (12 points) and
Deandrea Sawyers (19 points) in the win.
The Owls led for more than 15 minutes in the first half of action, shooting a respectable 14-of-27 (51.9 percent) from the floor. Kennesaw State totaled nine assists on 14 field goals in the half as Frye led the way and continued to build on her successful career –she entered the game with 159 career assists, sixth on the all-time D-I records list.
After a back-and-forth first half that saw five lead changes and three ties, Dulkoski's two 3-pointers in the second quarter jumpstarted the Owls to help take their largest lead of the half of seven points.
Up 20-19 with 8:20 remaining until halftime, Dulkoski hit back-to-back 3-pointers to help hold off an Osprey offensive attack that also shot over 50 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes of action.
Entering the game with a 7-3 mark when leading at the half, the Owls turned up the intensity on the defensive in the third quarter, holding UNF to 3-of-17 (17.6 percent) shooting from the floor.
North Florida managed just seven points in the frame as Kennesaw State forced three turnovers and was a plus-15 on the glass in the quarter. The Owls also held the Ospreys in check at the free throw line, not allowing a single freebie all quarter long to keep UNF off the scoreboard as much as possible.
KSU, on the other end, turned defense into offense as the Owls outscored the Ospreys 14-4 in the paint in the third and 9-0 off the bench. Sawyers led the attack out of the half, scoring nine points in the quarter on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor.
Kennesaw State reached its largest lead of 29 points with 4:20 remaining in the game, as the Owls held UNF to just under 20 percent shooting in the second half.
NextKennesaw State will hit the road for a pair of Atlantic Sun Conference games against Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson on Saturday and Monday, respectively. Both games will be on ESPN3, with Saturday's game set to begin at 4 p.m. and Monday's game set for 2 p.m.
Coach Perry Quote"I thought we did a great job defensively, especially in the second half. UNF shot over 50 percent in the first half and we really focused on that end in the second half. We rebounded the ball very well tonight and took some good shots on the offensive end. We wanted to leave a lasting impression and we wanted to end with a bang, and I thought we did just that. It was fitting for
Jasmine McAllister to end with a double-double. She played very well tonight. It was also great to see
Deandrea Sawyers come off the bench and have a strong game. Overall, tonight was a great effort and they played for each other and played very hard."
