MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Kennesaw State women's tennis teams' attempt for back-to-back victories just came up short as the Owls suffered a 4-3 setback to host Alabama State during day 2 of the Alabama State Invitational in Montgomery.

"Today presented many challenges, some of which we stepped up to and others we fell just short on," assistant head coach Miranda Foley said. "Ashleigh De Wet, another one of our seniors, had a big day winning both her singles and doubles matches. Every time we play we are presented with opportunities to learn regardless of the outcome and its all part of the process these young ladies are going through. The result didn't quite go our way but it was a battle up until the last ball was struck."

After Alabama State (3-3) won the doubles point, the match came down to No. 4 singles where Patricia Regel outlasted Isabela Castro, 7-6, 1-6, 6-2 to clinch the win for the Hornets.

For the second day in a row, the Owls (1-5) earned victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles as Cristina Martin and Laura Hopton won their respective matches. Martin defeated Arantxia Wijngaarde, 6-3, 6-3, at the number one spot, while Hopton recorded a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Brankica Orlovic at No. 2 singles.

Ashleigh De Wet also registered a win a No. 6 singles, defeating Nicole Tekelova, 6-3, 0-6, 6-4.

De Wet and Alexandra Mercado also teamed to post a win at No. 3 doubles, defeating Patricia Regel and Irina Cvijovic, 6-3.

The Owls conclude weekend play on Sunday (Feb. 14) when they meet Georgia Southern in a 1 p.m. (ET) in Montgomery.
