FRANKFORT, Ky. – On Wednesday night in a first-round game at the NAIA Division I National Championship tournament, the Southern Polytechnic State University women's basketball team, the No. 8 seed in the Second Quadrant, fell by the score of 84-68 to the Campbellsville University Lady Tigers, the Second Quadrant's top seed, at the Frankfort Convention Center. Campbellsville is rated fourth nationally in NAIA Division I while Southern Polytechnic received 21 points in the latest coaches' poll to rank 29th.

The contest would up being the final game in the 12-year history of the Southern Poly program. The Hornets advanced to the NAIA Division I national tournament four times in the last five seasons, going 113-47 overall during that time. SPSU had a 195-180 all-time record with an NAIA Division I Sweet 16 appearance in 2010, a Southern States Athletic Conference regular-season co-championship in 2011 and SSAC Tournament titles in both 2010 and 2011. This season, Southern Poly earned an automatic bid to the NAIA Division I nationals after claiming the outright SSAC Eastern Division crown.

In the Hornets' last contest ever, there were six ties and six lead changes before the Lady Tigers went up 25-24 with 5:26 left in the opening half and never trailed again. Campbellsville stretched the advantage to 42-31 by the intermission and SPSU never got within that 11-point margin after halftime as the Lady Tigers began the second half with a 20-4 run to lead 62-35 with 11:07 to go. From there, the closest Southern Poly got was 82-68 in the final seconds.

The 84 points scored by Campbellsville was the most allowed by the Hornets in a single game this season. The Lady Tigers shot 47.8 percent (33-of-69) from the floor and 60.0 percent (12-of-20) at the foul line while SPSU finished at 44.6 percent (25-of-56) and 76.5 percent (13-of-17), respectively. Campbellsville outrebounded Southern Poly 44-30, including 18-8 on the offensive end. The Hornets, who had a season-low four assists while the Lady Tigers ended with 20, were guilty of 18 turnovers to Campbellsville's 10.

Two-time All-SSAC selection Sarah Ogoke tossed in a game-high 23 points, giving her an even 1000 during her two-year career at SPSU. Erica Turner collected 16 points, five rebounds and a game-best three steals while Alexandria Prince contributed 13 points and five boards off the bench. Shana Ward added 11 points in a reserve role. Southern Poly was without 6-foot-1 senior post player Arnissa Galloway, an all-conference honoree and the 2014 SSAC Defensive Player of the Year, who did not make the trip due to an illness.

The Hornets wrap up the 2013-14 campaign with a 23-8 overall mark while the Lady Tigers are 31-3. Campbellsville moves on to the second round of the 32-team event and plays again on Friday afternoon.
