Women's basketball player Ogoke selected as SSAC Player of Week

1/13/2014 12:00:00 AM

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Southern Polytechnic State University women's basketball player Sarah Ogoke was selected as the Southern States Athletic Conference Player of the Week for her play from Jan. 6-12. It marks the first time in her career that Ogoke was chosen for the honor.

Ogoke, a 5-foot-9 senior guard from Sugar Land, Texas, led Southern Polytechnic to a perfect 3-0 record last week with all of the wins coming by double digits. She averaged 17.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.7 steals while shooting 47.1 percent (16-of-34) from the field, including 44.4 percent (4-of-9) from three-point range and 89.5 percent (17-of-19) at the free throw line. Southern Poly beat SSAC foe Bethel University (Tenn.), rated 10th nationally in NAIA Division I, and Xavier University (La.), which received five points in last week's coaches' poll to rank No. 34. In the Hornets' 78-64 victory over Bethel, Ogoke had a game-high 24 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

On the season, Ogoke leads SPSU in scoring (16.3 points per game), three-point field goals made (15) and minutes played (34.6 a contest). She also averages 6.9 rebounds and 2.9 assists with 15 steals and six blocked shots. Ogoke is shooting 78.3 percent (36-of-46) from the foul line.

Ogoke does not appear among the conference or NAIA Division I national leaders in most statistical categories because she has not played in at least 75 percent of Southern Poly's games this season. The 2013 SSAC Defensive Player of the Year, SSAC Newcomer of the Year and NAIA Division I Third Team All-American has competed in just nine of her team's 13 contests in 2013-14 due to injuries.

The Hornets are 9-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play. SPSU hosts an SSAC game against Southern Wesleyan University on Thursday. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Hornets Nest.
