MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Two Southern Polytechnic State University men's soccer players were recently chosen to the 2013 Southern States Athletic Conference All-Tournament Team. A total of 11 players from four squads earned the recognition.
From Southern Polytechnic, senior Gabe Warner and freshman Philipp Roessler were selected to the SSAC All-Tournament Team. The tournament began on Nov. 9 and concluded last Saturday in Montgomery at the Emory Folmar YMCA Soccer Complex.
Warner, a 5-foot-9 defender from Grovetown, Ga., was earlier placed on the 2013 SSAC All-Academic Team for the second consecutive year and also represented Southern Poly on the Musco Lighting Champions of Character Team. Warner, the team captain, was the only member of the Hornets to start all 18 contests this season. He started every match in his career, which totaled 82, and led SPSU in minutes played each of the past three years.
A 5-foot-10 defender/midfielder out of Bochum, Germany, Roessler played in 16 matches with 15 starts this season. He was in Southern Poly's starting lineup for both SSAC Tournament games and ended the year with an assist.
The Hornets finished 2013 at 10-6-2 overall and 5-5-1 in conference play, tying for sixth place. As the No. 7 seed in the SSAC Tournament, SPSU reached the semifinal round with an opening-round 1-0 victory at second-seed William Carey University, which was ranked No. 10 nationally in the NAIA at the time.
