MONTGOMERY, Ala. – In a Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal match on Thursday evening, the No. 7-seed Southern Polytechnic State University men's soccer team ended its 2013 season with a 2-1 loss to the third-seeded Martin Methodist College RedHawks at the Emory Folmar YMCA Soccer Complex. Martin Methodist has won seven straight games and is rated No. 14 nationally in the NAIA.
"We created chances to even the game, but Martin Methodist did a nice job of finishing it off," Southern Polytechnic head coach Kom Momeni said. "They are a good team.
"I was very proud of the effort and energy tonight. Senior captain Gabe Warner played an excellent game, along with fellow senior defender Khris Hammock."
After a scoreless opening half, all of the match's goals were recorded in the final 15 minutes. The first score of the night came on an own goal by Southern Poly, which put the RedHawks in front in the 76th minute (75:39). MMC established a 2-0 lead in the 80th minute (79:05) but the Hornets responded quickly, slicing their deficit to one when Hammock knocked in a goal off an assist from James Harris in the 82nd minute (81:07). From there, SPSU outshot Martin Methodist 3-0 but could not get the ball in the net.
The RedHawks finished with a 16-11 advantage in shots, including 7-5 on goal, and took 11 corner kicks to Southern Poly's two. The Hornets committed 16 fouls while MMC had nine.
In goal for SPSU, Vincent Easterbrook played all 90 minutes and was credited with six saves.
Southern Poly concludes its season with a 10-6-2 overall record while Martin Methodist moves on to Saturday's SSAC Tournament championship game at 13-3-1.
