Four men's soccer players collect postseason honors from SSAC

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Four members of the 2013 Southern Polytechnic State University men's soccer team recently collected postseason honors from the Southern States Athletic Conference. The 12 SSAC head coaches voted to determine the award winners.



Forward Omar Kanteh, a 6-foot-3 junior from Banjul, Gambia, was named First Team All-SSAC. Kanteh leads Southern Polytechnic in goals (13), points (30), shots (78), shots on goal (42) and game-winning goals (four). He tops the SSAC in shots, shots per game (5.20), shots on goal, shots on goal per game (2.80), game-winning goals per game (0.27) and is tied for the lead in game-winning goals. Nationally in the NAIA, Kanteh is tied for sixth in shots on goal per game and seventh in shots per game.

Sophomore Ahmed Zaky, a 6-foot-3 midfielder out of Cairo, Egypt, was a Second Team All-SSAC selection. Zaky has scored six goals, including three game-winners, with six assists and 18 points for Southern Poly. In the conference, he is tied for third in both game-winning goals and game-winning goals per game (0.19), tied for sixth in assists per game (0.38) and tied for seventh in assists.

Earning a spot on the SSAC All-Freshman Team was Julian Tonges, a 5-foot-10 midfielder from Hessen, Germany. While playing in all 17 matches with 16 starts for the Hornets, Tonges has tallied four goals and three assists for 11 points.  

Gabe Warner, a 5-foot-9 senior defender out of Grovetown, Ga., garnered a place on the SSAC All-Academic Team for the second consecutive year and also represented SPSU on the Musco Lighting Champions of Character Team. A biology major with a 3.66 cumulative grade-point average, Warner is the only Southern Poly player to start all 17 contests this season and has started every match in his career, which totals 81. He has led the Hornets in minutes played in each of the past three years.

SPSU is 10-5-2 overall and finished 5-5-1 in conference play, tying for sixth place. Southern Poly, the No. 7 seed, plays No. 3-seed Martin Methodist College, which is rated 14th nationally in the NAIA, in an SSAC Tournament semifinal game on Thursday. The match is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Central time (7:30 p.m. Eastern) in Montgomery, Ala.
