Men's basketball players McElrath, Dortch collect postseason awards from SSAC

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Southern Polytechnic State University men's basketball players CJ McElrath and Marcus Dortch recently collected postseason awards from the Southern States Athletic Conference. McElrath and Dortch were both named to the 10-member SSAC All-Eastern Division Team while McElrath also landed on the 26-player SSAC All-Academic Team.



McElrath, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound senior guard from Grapevine, Texas, was also selected to the SSAC All-Division Team last year. During his senior season, he led Southern Polytechnic in steals (40, 1.29 per game) while averaging 11.19 points, 2.65 assists and 2.26 rebounds a contest. McElrath, who made 54 three-point field goals in 2013-14, ended his three-year Southern Poly career with 1036 points. He earned his bachelor's degree in business administration, graduating with a 3.35 grade-point average, from SPSU last spring. He is currently carrying a 3.75 GPA as a graduate student in the University's Master of Business Administration program.

A 6-foot-3, 190-pound sophomore guard from Powder Springs, Ga., Dortch paced the Hornets in starts (30), scoring (513 points, 16.5 per game), field goals made (169) and three-point field goals made (82) this past season while tallying 3.61 rebounds and 1.16 steals an outing. He shot 46.4 percent (169-of-364) from the field, including 43.6 percent (82-of-188) from three-point range and 80.9 percent (93-of-115) at the free throw line. Within the conference, Dortch ranked second in three-point field goals made per game (2.65), third in three-point field goal percentage, third in total three-point field goals made, sixth in free throw percentage, ninth in total points and ninth in field goal percentage. Nationally in NAIA Division I, he was No. 18 in total three-point field goals made, No. 22 in three-point field goal percentage and No. 24 in three-point field goals made per game.

In 2013-14, Southern Poly finished 13-18 overall and 7-11 in conference play, tying for fourth place in the SSAC Eastern Division.
