MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Five members of the 2014 Southern Polytechnic State University baseball team recently received postseason awards from the Southern States Athletic Conference. The SSAC head coaches voted to determine the award winners.
Named to the All-SSAC Team were Southern Polytechnic seniors Khirus Ware and Dalton Martinez while junior Matt Miller was selected as SSAC Newcomer of the Year. Darius Reese, a junior, was placed on the SSAC Gold Glove Team while senior Chris Dykes is Southern Poly's representative on the SSAC Champions of Character Team.
Ware, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound outfielder from Lithonia, Ga., leads Southern Poly in batting average (.366), at-bats (183), runs scored (43), hits (67), doubles (12), triples (seven), RBIs (36), total bases (99), slugging percentage (.541) and on-base percentage (.457). Within the SSAC, he is tops in triples and triples per game (0.14) while ranking third in total bases, third in total bases per game (1.90), sixth in hits, sixth in slugging percentage, seventh in hits per game (1.29), eighth in batting average, eighth in runs scored, tied for eighth in doubles and tied for eighth in RBIs. Nationally in the NAIA, Ware is tied for No. 6 in triples and tied for No. 8 in triples per game.
A 5-foot-10, 160-pound infielder out of Collierville, Tenn., Martinez paces the Hornets in sacrifice flies (four) and sacrifice hits (13). He is batting .353 with seven doubles, 29 RBIs, a .418 slugging percentage, a .398 on-base percentage and 18 stolen bases in 20 attempts. Martinez ranks ninth in the conference in assists per game (2.71).
Miller, a 6-foot, 180-pound left-handed pitcher/outfielder from Jacksonville, Fla., is SPSU's leader in games played with 53. On the mound, he tops the team in wins (six), starts (14), complete games (two) and shutouts (two). Miller is tied for No. 7 in the conference in both fewest runs allowed (26) and fewest runs allowed per game (1.73), and is 10th in ERA (2.75). He is also batting .321 with six doubles, 25 RBIs and a .440 on-base percentage.
A 5-foot-6, 160-pound outfielder out of Alexander City, Ala., Reese splits time in right field and center field for Southern Poly. He has not committed an error in 96 chances, including six assists. Reese has been hit by pitches a team-high 19 times and has a .318 batting average with 33 runs scored, 29 RBIs, a .408 on-base percentage and 16 stolen bases in 18 tries. In the SSAC, he ranks eighth in at-bats per game (.3.67), 10th in triples per game (0.06) and tied for No. 10 in triples (three).
Dykes is a 6-foot, 180-pound outfielder from Vidalia, Ga. He is batting .277 with 20 runs scored and 14 RBIs. Dykes was once named the SSAC Player of the Week last year and was picked to the 2013 SSAC Gold Glove Team.
The Hornets, ranked 14th nationally in the NAIA, are 38-16 overall and ended 20-9 during conference regular-season play for third place. SPSU, the No. 3 seed, plays its opening SSAC Tournament contest on Wednesday at 1 p.m. Central time (2 p.m. Eastern) in Montgomery, Ala., against the sixth-seeded Martin Methodist College RedHawks.
