KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State softball team found itself in the middle of a pair stellar pitching performances on Friday (Mar. 6) and came away with mixed results during the opening day of the Owls Invitational at Bailey Park.
In its first game, Kennesaw State (11-6) rode the right arm of senior
Paige Mathews to record an 11-0, five-inning victory over Austin Peay. Mathews (4-2) was dominant from the outset as she held the Governors (1-10) hitless through 3.2 innings and finished with a KSU career-high nine strikeouts in four innings.
Mathews recorded her first eight outs of the game by strikeout and did not surrender a hit until there were two outs in the fourth inning. Only four of the 16 batters she faced reached base, including three via walks.
The Owls had the table turned in their second game as Saint Louis left-hander Brianna Lore threw a no-hitter as she surrendered two walks, struck out two and faced just three batters over the minimum in seven innings.
In the opener against Austin Peay, the Owls did all their scoring in the first three innings. Kennesaw State broke open the game in the third as it sent 13 batters to the plate, taking advantage of seven errors to score eight runs.
Junior designated player
Hillary Kartman sparked the big inning with a leadoff double, walk and scored twice.
Junior
Emily Bishop collected two RBI and leadoff hitter
Natalie Rhodes had two hits and scored three runs.
Kennesaw State will be back in action on Saturday (Mar. 7) when it takes on Austin Peay at 2:30 p.m. (ET).
