ROCKY FACE, Ga. – Following a 2013-14 season in which it advanced to the NCAA Championships, the Kennesaw State men's golf demonstrated in the 2014-15 season-opening tournament that it will once again be a national title contender after tying for third place at the 14-team Carpet Capital Collegiate that concluded Sunday at the par-72, 7,012-yard The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Ga.

After standing atop the leaderboard after the first two rounds, the Owls carded a final-round 5-under par 283 to finish at 12-under par 852 and tie Auburn for third place, four shots behind South Carolina. The Gamecocks recorded the low round on Sunday, posting a 12-under par score of 276 to conclude 36 holes with a 16-under par total of 848 and finish one shot ahead of defending tournament champion Georgia Tech (849). Two-time defending national champion Alabama finished fifth with an 11-under par score of 853.

"We learned a lot about this team this week. I think we showed how good we can potentially be," head coach Jay Moseley said. "We had some guys that played really well this week and showed that they're some of the best players in the country. When we put it all together we are a really solid team.

"I know that they (players) wish for a little better finish. We didn't quite finish off our round yesterday (Saturday) and today like we quite wanted to," Moseley added. "It's early in the year, we're going to make some mistakes and we're going to learn from those and just try to continue to get better and better. If we can improve on what we did this week and be a much better team we are right now in the spring, I think this team is capable of competing and playing against anybody in the country."

The field for the Carpet Capital Collegiate included nine teams that finished last season in the Top 50 and six teams that advanced to the NCAA Championships a year ago.

Kennesaw State was led by senior Jimmy Beck, who shot a 2-under par 70 on Sunday to finish the tournament at 5-under par 211. He was joined in the Top 10 by senior Kelby Burton, who tied for 10th at 4-under 212 after shooting a third-round 69.

Georgia Tech's Ollie Schneiderjans claimed individual medalist honors with a 12-under par total of 204 to record a two-shot victory over Alabama's Robbie Shelton (206).

Senior Austin Vick and sophomore Teremoana Beaucousin (216) tied 23rd with even-par scores of 216, while freshman Fredrik Nilehn tied for 60th in his collegiate debut. Nilehn turned his best round of the tournament on Sunday, carding an even-par total of 72.

Kennesaw State is back in action on Friday (Sept. 12) when it travels to Chapel Hill, N.C. to compete in the 18-team Tar Heel Intercollegiate that is hosted by North Carolina.

"It is always good to go straight into another week after you've played well so we'll build on what we did this week and continue to get better," Moseley said. "But I'm looking forward to this week and seeing how well we can play again."
