GEORGIA TECH RESULTS | ITA RESULTS KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State men's tennis team found success this weekend, putting up strong showings at both the ITA All-American Championships as well as the Georgia Tech Invitational.
Simon Pritchard paced the weekend for the Owls in Tulsa, Oklahoma, winning his opening match at the ITA Championships with a 6-2, 6-2, victory over Ole Miss Vinod Gowda.
Alejandro Valencia picked up his consolation round win over Tulsa in commanding fashion, 6-2, 6-1, after falling in a three-set thriller to Wake Forest in the tournament opener.
Closer to home at Georgia Tech, the duo of
Jake Bouchillon and
Manuel Castellanos took top billing in Group B Doubles, earning the championship title after two wins over Georgia State and one over Florida Gulf Coast.
In singles action,
Jake Bouchillon took a win over Furman's Stefan Rhodes, 6-1, 6-3, in Group B while
Drew Wendel made it to the semifinals in Group C, taking down Florida Gulf Coast's Michael Beiler in a close one, 7-6, 7-6, before breezing past Alabama-Birmingham's Oliver Poysti 6-0, 6-2.
"We were exposed to some really good competition both in Tulsa and at Georgia Tech," said KSU head coach
Eduardo Rincon. "It's nice that the team realizes that their hard work does pay off. Jake and Manuel did a great job bringing our first championship of the year. They played well all throughout the tournament and trusted our system. Drew and Jake also did a great job in singles.
"Simon and Alejandro played really well in Tulsa. Both of the matches they lost were heartbreakers and both of their wins were significant. After our second tournament of the year, I have seen a lot of improvement and a lot of fight from our guys. We will use the next two weeks to work on individual needs that Hernan (Hatem) and I identified and we will work extremely hard on becoming a better team."
The Owls are back in action on Oct. 10-12, in the College of Charleston Invite in Charleston, South Carolina.
