UPSTATE RESULTS | SIC RESULTS KENNESAW, Ga. – A pair of strong showings from
David Durham and
Alejandro Valencia highlighted a big opening weekend for the Kennesaw State men's tennis team as the Owls opened up at USC Upstate as well as the Southern Intercollegiate Championships.
Durham won a pair of matches at the prestigious SIC Tournament held in Athens, Ga. while Valencia earned a trip to the finals at Upstate.
"The first tournament of the year is always very interesting," said KSU head coach
Eduardo Rincon. "This weekend gave us an idea of where we are and where we need to be physically and mentally. I'm looking forward to getting back on the court and working on cleaning our singles game up a little bit more. Overall we had a good weekend."
At the SIC,
Jake Bouchillon picked up a win over Clemson's Ryan McMullan in singles action while Durham's run included victories over the College of Charleston as well as Georgia.
Simon Pritchard and
Jorge Wilton each earned consolation round wins, Pritchard taking a match off of Georgia Tech and Wilton earning one against Vanderbilt.
In Spartanburg, S.C.,
Manuel Castellanos brought home the first win of the weekend followed by triumphs from
Matthew Johnson and
Will George, but it was Valencia who had the big individual showing, earning two wins to sure up a spot in the final's match, taking it down to the wire in two sets.
Also in singles action,
Alex Pena and
Drew Wendel each earned a win as well.
KSU went on to take four doubles wins during the weekend at Upstate as well, all opening round victories.
Following the split weekend, the team will compete in downtown Atlanta, Ga. at the Georgia Tech Invitational on Sept. 26-28.
