Scrappy Earns Runner-Up Finish in 2014 Challenge

KENNESAW, Ga. – Despite a dedicated effort from the Kennesaw State faithful, Scrappy the Owl fell in the 2014 Atlantic Sun Mascot Cup Final as Florida Gulf Coast's Azul the Eagle took home the championship with a late push from its fans, 85,457 votes to 70,656 votes.
 
In the hard-fought battle, Scrappy jumped out early and continued to increase its lead throughout Wednesday. Overnight Owl Nation never slept and built a 12,000 vote advantage.
 
The lead would not last as Azul mounted an incredible comeback on Thursday, with the FGCU eagle taking the lead in the final hours of the competition. The win gave Azul back-to-back A-Sun Mascot Championships.
 
It was Scrappy's first loss in the event, after the Kennesaw State mascot breezed through the group stage, before taking a commanding victory over Stetson's John B. in the semifinals on Monday.
 
The championship took place over two days, Wednesday and Thursday, July 30-31, with voting going from 10 a.m. on Wednesday until 4 p.m. on Thursday. Fans could log their votes via several social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
 
Overall fans showed tremendous enthusiasm, creativity with their voting throughout the 2014 Mascot Cup. In total 210,466 votes were cast for all the mascots in the various matches. The format and social media platforms provided fans the chance to vote as often as they liked, and they did the past two weeks.
