U.S. Amateur ChampionshipGREENSBORO, Ga. – Kennesaw State rising seniors
Jimmy Beck earned co-medalist honors and
Austin Vick survived a playoff during sectional qualifying play at Reynolds Plantation's Great Waters Course in Greensboro, Ga., on Tuesday (July 22) to qualify for the 2014 U.S. Amateur Golf Championship that will be contested Aug. 11-17 at Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, Ga.
Â
"I am very, very pleased with our guys' performance down at Great Waters," Kennesaw State head coach
Jay Moseley said. "Obviously, they have good local knowledge of the golf course so that definitely played a part in their success this week. In the U.S. Amateur qualifier you never know what might happen because it is 36 holes and a lot can happen. There are always a lot of great players and it takes a good stretch of golf to make it into the U.S. Amateur."
Â
Beck, the 2013 Georgia Amateur Champion and 2014 Atlantic Sun Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year, shared co-medalist honors with Clemson's Blake Kennedy after carding rounds of 68-68 for 36-hole total of 8-under par 136.
Â
Vick, a second team A-Sun Conference selection, concluded regulation play at 5-under par 139 following rounds of 70-69 to advance to a seven-man playoff. The Evans, Ga., native secured a spot in the Championship after making par on the second playoff hole.
Â
"We all knew a couple years back that when the USGA announced that the Amateur was coming to Atlanta Athletic Club, our guys were really fired up to try to make it into that event this summer," Moseley said. "It carries a little more special meaning when it is in your hometown.
Â
"So for Jimmy and Austin to make it today was pretty exciting and pretty fulfilling for our program," Moseley added. Â
Â
Kennesaw State rising sophomore
Chris Guglielmo also advanced to the playoff and finished as the first alternate as the top five individuals from the qualifying site advance to the Championship. The Cumming, Ga. native is one of two current Owls that are alternates for the Championship as rising senior
Kelby Burton, earned first alternate status at the Columbia Country Club in Blythewood, S.C. on July 8.
Â
"I think Jimmy just continues his solid play that he has all summer long and I think he will play really well at the U.S. Amateur because it is a tough, hard golf course and his game is really solid and steady," Moseley said. "Austin has proved that he can get as hot as anybody in the country. He played a great back nine to vault himself in position to qualify.
Â
"I am excited to see what both of those guys can do at the Atlanta Athletic Club in a couple weeks," Moseley added. "I know they are really excited."
Â
Beck and Vick are the first Kennesaw State players to qualify for the U.S. Amateur Championship since All-Americans
Jeff Karlsson and
Matt Nagy accomplished the feat in 2011.
