HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Freshman Teremoana Beaucousin carded a 1-under par 69 to lead Kennesaw State during the opening round of the 2014 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships at the par-70, 6,941-yard Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.

Beaucousin's round included a pair of birdies and a bogey and helped the Owls to a first-round total of 14-over par 294. The 18-hole total placed KSU tied for 27th with Virginia Tech after the Owls began their round on Friday and concluded play on Saturday.

"Obviously, we're disappointed in our start. We just didn't play the type of golf we're capable of playing," Kennesaw State head coach Jay Moseley said. "None of us are completely satisfied with the way we played but we just have to capitalize on our opportunities better and make more birdies.

"All the little things just didn't go right today, but I know what this team is capable of doing and so do they," Moseley added. "We'll just regroup and obviously we have a long wait until we play our second round. We'll just get some practice in, stay loose and get after it tomorrow (Sunday)."

Beaucousin, who played his final seven holes in 2-under par, finished tied for 30th after the completion of the first round.

Kelby Burton (T-111) posted a 4-over par 74, while Austin Vick (T-122) turned in a 5-over par 75 and Jimmy Beck and Chris Guglielmo shot rounds of 6-over par 76 and are tied for 131st in the 156-player field.

The 8 hour and 10 minute weather delay that affected play on Friday has resulted in schedule changes that currently have the second wave of 15 teams completing 36 holes on Saturday. The Owls are scheduled to get their second round underway at 9:10 a.m. (ET) on Sunday with play beginning on the first hole. KSU will again be grouped with Kentucky and Missouri.

Kennesaw State will play 36 holes and be looking to move up the leaderboard and position itself for a top eight eight finish. The top eight teams will advance to match play where they will be seeded 1-8 with play beginning on Tuesday (May 27).

The top 40 individuals and ties after 54 holes will play a fourth round on Monday (May 26) to determine the individual champion.

Both the final round of individual play and team match play will be covered live by Golf Channel Monday through Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. (ET).

South Carolina shot an 8-under par 272 to lead the 30-team field, while the Gamecocks' Will Starke carded a 6-under 64 to hold a one-shot advantage in the individual standings.
