JACKSONVILLE, Fla. –
After day one of the Atlantic Sun Championship, the men are leading East Tennessee State by 21.5 points and have set themselves up very nicely going into the second day.

"On the men's side, we had a great day and are in good position headed into the finals," Director of Track and Field Andy Eggerth said. "All five of our long jumpers and 100m runners qualified on to the finals. We've had several lifetime best performances today, including Martynas' conference record hammer throw, Bilal and Mulder long jumping over the seven-meter barrier, Dani earning bronze in his first 10k, Terrell with an NCAA qualifying 14.11 in the hurdles and so forth. I look forward to even greater accomplishments tomorrow!"

Hammer Thrower Martynas Sedys set a conference record with a throw of 64.33m (211'1"). That throw is the 24th in the nation and 14th in the East Region. Teammates Robert Harvey III and Enrique Gaitan swept the podium in the hammer with second and third finishes.

Harvey also won the shot put with a throw of 15.77m (51'9").

In the long jump, KSU had five athletes finish in the top seven with all of them jumping more than seven meters.

In the final race of the day, distance runners Natan Reuter and Daniel Garcia finished in second and third place in the 10k. Reuter's time was 31:02.01 and Garcia's time was 31:46.47. When asked how Garcia felt immediately after the race he replied, "Incredibly good."

On the women's side, they have set themselves up tomorrow to make a run at Jacksonville for the A-Sun title.

"We had a few events that really fell apart for us," Eggerth said. "We're about 20 points behind where we need to be if we want to bring home the hardware, so we're going to have to dig deep and have some personal record performances tomorrow. Nonetheless, we did have some solid performances with Christie and Shakedra in the heptathlon, Joyce with a PR in the hammer, four girls moving on to the 100m hurdle final, five moving on to the 100m final, Lilly and Heather with strong 10k performances and I think Katie jumping a PR in the pole vault. We are a much stronger day two team on the women's side, so there is still hope."

Christie Leverette is leading the heptathlon after day one.

Lilly Kidane finished third in the 10k in 37:44.03 with teammate Heather Morris also scoring coming in eighth with a time of 38:56.37.

Alicia Whittle won the 100m trial to lead a group of Owls into the finals for the event.

The decathlon and heptathlon will continue tomorrow morning with the rest of the events getting started in the afternoon.
