Kelby Burton Golfweek FeatureAUBURN, Ala. – Behind a career performance from junior
Kelby Burton, Kennesaw State turned in the second-lowest round on Friday and is in third place heading into Saturday's final round of the 2014 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Auburn Regional at the par-72, 7,254-yard Auburn University Club in Auburn, Ala.
Burton posted a 5-under par 67 to lead the Owls to a 3-over total of 291 and a 36-hole score of 12-over par 288. KSU is two shots behind host and No. 23 Auburn (586), while top-ranked and No. 1 seed Alabama leads the 14-team field with a 5-under par 571.
Competing in his first NCAA Regional, Burton recorded eight birdies on his round, including a stretch of four consecutive on holes four through seven. He capped off the day with a birdie on the 18th and holds a share of the lead with Alabama's Cory Whitsett at 4-under par 140.
Burton's 67 represents the lowest round of the tournament and equals the Kennesaw State record for lowest 18-hole score on a par-72 course.
Jeff Karlsson and
Matt Nagy each posted rounds of 67 during the 2011 NCAA Southeast Regional at Golden Ocala in Ocala, Fla.
Junior
Jimmy Beck carded a 2-over par 74 on Friday and is tied for 23rd with a 4-over par total of 148. Freshman
Teremoana Beaucousin and junior
Austin Vick are tied for 32nd at 6-over par 150, while freshman
Chris Guglielmo (153) is tied for 46th.
The Auburn Regional is one of six 54-hole regional tournaments that will be conducted May 15-17. Other regionals will be held in Columbia, Mo. (Missouri), Raleigh, N.C. (North Carolina State), Sugar Grove, Ill. (Northern Illinois), Eugene, Ore. (Oregon) and San Antonio, Texas (Texas-San Antonio).
Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.
The Owls are scheduled to tee off at 9:40 a.m. (ET) from the 1st hole and will be grouped with Alabama and Auburn. All final-round action can be followed live on the Internet at
