AUBURN, Ala. – Junior Kelby Burton carded a 1-over par 73 to lead Kennesaw State during the first round of the 2014 NCAA Division I Auburn Regional that opened Thursday (May 15) at the Auburn University Club in Auburn, Ala.

Burton's play helped the Owls to a 9-over par total of 297 and into a tie for fifth place with UNC Greensboro and Louisville. Top-ranked and No. 1 seed Alabama leads the 14-team field with a 1-under total of 287.

Kennesaw State is four shots behind second-place Texas (293). Host and No. 4 seed Auburn (294) is third and No. 8 seed Colorado (297) is fourth.

Play was delayed two hours due to heavy over night rains and round one played in cool temperatures and windy conditions.

Burton, who shot a 3-over par 38 on his front nine that included a double-bogey on the opening hole, righted things on the back nine and ended his round with a birdie on the 18th hole that gave him a closing-nine 1-under par 35 to finish with a 73 and in a tie for 14th place.

Junior Jimmy Beck and freshman Teremoana Beaucousin each recorded rounds of 2-ove par 74 and are tied for 20th.  Freshman Chris Guglielmo and junior Austin Vick each posted 4-over par scores of 76.

The Auburn Regional is one of six 54-hole regional tournaments that will be conducted May 15-17. Other regionals will be held in Columbia, Mo. (Missouri), Raleigh, N.C. (North Carolina State), Sugar Grove, Ill. (Northern Illinois), Eugene, Ore. (Oregon) and San Antonio, Texas (Texas-San Antonio).

Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.

The Owls are scheduled to tee off 9:20 a.m. (ET) from the 10th hole and will be grouped with Colorado and Louisville. All 54 holes of the Auburn Regional can be followed live on the Internet at www.golfstatresults.com.
