KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State softball team used a fifth-inning rally to earn a 5-4 come-from-behind win over rival Mercer in Atlantic Sun Conference play on Wednesday night (April 9) at Bailey Park.

KSU makes it two-in-a-row to improve to 20-21 on the season and 9-9 in the A-Sun, while the Bears fall to 29-14 and 11-5 in league play.

After the visitors took a quick 1-0 in the top of the first on a bases-loaded walk, senior Angie Dascoli evened things up in the bottom of the inning on a RBI single up the middle to score freshman Taylor Denton from second base.

KSU took little time in taking its first lead of the contest in the bottom of the second as sophomore Kara Chambers was plated on a fielder's choice RBI from senior Carly Van Auken for the 2-1 edge.

The Bears again evened the score with a run in the third, before taking a 4-2 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth.

Following a brief delay of play due to lighting technical difficulties in the bottom of the fifth frame, the Owls capitalized on three hits and two Bear miscues to grab a 5-4 advantage. After a leadoff single from senior Sara Sikes and a Mercer fielding error put on junior Natalie Rhodes on base, Denton notched a bunt single and advanced to second on the second Bear error of the inning, scoring Sikes on the play.

Dascoli then knocked in the tying run on an RBI sacrifice fly, before a Chambers single up the middle plated a speedy Denton from second base for the go-ahead run.

Despite loading the bases in the top of the seventh, senior pitcher Amanda Henderson worked out of the jam to earn the complete game win. Henderson (16-8) struck out eight in the outing, while giving up four runs on 10 hits.

The Owls also registered 10 hits in the win, with Dascoli putting up a 2-of-2 performance with two RBI. Chambers added two hits and an RBI, while Sikes and Denton each posted a pair of hits in the game.

Kirsten Stevens (11-4) took the loss for the Bears, who got three hits and two RBI from Kaylynn Sloat.

The Owls continue their home stand with a three-game A-sun series with Stetson on Saturday and Sunday, April 12-13. KSU and the Hatters will play a doubleheader on Saturday, followed by a single game on Sunday. First pitch for both days is slated for 1 p.m. ET.
