BOX SCORE (XML) | BOX SCORE (PDF)FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Kennesaw State baseball team couldn't overcome the tough pitching of Florida Gulf Coast on Friday night, falling to the Eagles 5-0 in the Atlantic Sun Conference series opener at Swanson Stadium.
The Owls put up just four hits during the night, one from catcher
Max Pentecost that extended his A-Sun leading hit streak to 14 games as KSU sees its record move to 14-19 on the year and 2-8 in the conference standings.
Florida Gulf Coast, now 20-11 overall and 6-1 in league play, picked up a complete-game shutout performance from pitcher Michael Murray as the Eagles take an early 1-0 lead in the three-game series.
FGCU picked up an early lead, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first off of a bases clearing double from Zack Tillery. The Eagles then added on three more in the third, going up 5-0.
KSU threatened in the ninth, Pentecost sending a base hit up the middle followed by a stand-up double from
Bo Way, but the Owls failed to bring runs home, ending the game 5-0.
Colin Bennett,
Matt Bahnick, Pentecost and Way were the only four Owls with hits, Way collecting the only one for extra bases with his double, his seventh of the season.
For the Owls on the hill
Jordan Hillyer takes the loss after going all eight innings giving up five runs on 13 hits while striking out four, the longest outing of the season for the right hander.
The KSU defense held strong in the field behind Hillyer, Way along with shortstop
Kal Simmons coming up with big-time catches while the Owls went errorless on the scoreboard.
The two teams will square off again on Saturday, April 5, at 2 p.m. ET with
Travis Bergen set to take the hill for the Owls in game two of the three-game series.
