Senior ProfilesKENNESAW, Ga. – Senior Day provided mixed results for the Kennesaw State softball team during its doubleheader with East Tennessee State Saturday at Bailey Park.
Following senior introductions, it was the seniors who shined in Game 1 as
Amanda Henderson and
Bianca Durant highlighted an 8-0, 5-inning victory. The Owls (23-27, 12-12) were one strike away from a sweep before the Bucs (20-28, 7-14) scored twice in the seventh and eight times in the eighth to record a 12-5 victory.
Henderson (18-9) was perfect through four innings before her no-hitter was broken up on a leadoff double by Jackie Baird in the fifth inning. The Owls right-hander would allow just one more base runner en route to striking out 10 and settling for the one-hitter.
Durant provided the game's big blow with a three-run home run to right field that highlighted a five-run first inning against ETSU's Katie Wolff (5-12). Freshman
Taylor Denton and sophomore
Megan Veringa added two hits apiece during the Owls' nine-hit attack.
In the nightcap, Kennesaw State was one strike away from a sweep before Baird hit a two-run home run over the right field fence to give the Bucs a 4-3 lead. It was her second homer of the game as she connected for a two-run shot in the third against Henderson that made it a 3-2 game.
The Owls rallied for a run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game 4-4 on a double to left-center field by sophomore
Kara Chambers.
However, East Tennessee State sealed the win with an eight-run eighth inning to take a 12-4 lead.
Seniors
Carly Van Auken and
Sara Sikes had solid performances in the second game as Sikes went 3-for-4 with a run scored and Van Auken had a pair of doubles and collected three RBI.
The day began with the celebration of six seniors who are playing their final regular-season home games this weekend. Henderson, Durant, Sikes, Van Auken,
Angie Dascoli and
Stephanie Phillips were recognized prior to the day's first pitch.
Kennesaw State concludes its regular season on Sunday when it hosts ETSU at Bailey Park beginning at 1 p.m. (ET).
