BRASELTON, Ga. – Another chapter in the rivalry between Kennesaw State and Mercer was written as it played out on the golf course as the in-state rivals competed for the 2014 Atlantic Sun Conference men's golf championship at the par-72, 7,032-yard Legends Course at Chateau Elan in Braselton.

The two teams entered Tuesday's final round separated by two shots as the Bears held a slim advantage. For most of the third round, Kennesaw State and Mercer matched each other shot-for-shot as neither team held more than a four-shot advantage until late on the back nine.

That was where the Bears gained an advantage, posting an even-par score over the closing nine holes to record a final-round 5-over par 293 and finish the 54-hole event at 10-over par 874 to record a six-shot victory over the Owls (880).

Kennesaw State, which played the back nine in 5-over par, shot a closing-round 9-over par 297 to record its fourth consecutive top three finish at  the A-Sun Conference Championships.

Individually, junior Austin Vick and freshman Teremoana Beaucousin were engaged in a tight competition for individual medalist honors. Both players shot rounds of 74 and 73, respectively, to finish at 2-over par 218 and tie for second place, three shots behind Mercer's Trey Rule, who claimed individual medalist honors with a 1-under par 215. The tie for second marked season-best finishes for Vick and Beaucousin.

Rule was one of just two players to post an under-par score during the final round, joining East Tennessee State's Rhys Pugh with a 1-under par 71.

Kennesaw State placed all five players in the top 20, including four in the top 15. Junior Jimmy Beck tied for 11th at 6-over par 222, while redshirt junior Kelby Burton (224) tied for 13th and freshman Chris Guglielmo (228) tied for 19th.

With the A-Sun Conference Championships completed, the Owls will now turn their attention to postseason.

Kennesaw State is expected to receive an at-large bid to its fourth consecutive NCAA Division I Championships and fourth overall. The Owls will be seeking their second appearance in the finals after advancing to the 2011 championships and finishing 26th out of 30 teams.

The announcement of the entire 81-team field for the 2014 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships will be held on Monday, May 5 at 10 a.m. (ET), and air live on the Golf Channel.  The announcement will also be available on the Golf Channel's website at www.golfchannel.com.

The tournament will open with six 54-hole regionals that will be hosted by Auburn, Missouri, North Carolina State, Northern Illinois, Oregon and Texas-San Antonio May 15-17. The top five teams and low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.

The NCAA Championships will be conducted May 27 through June 1 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
