SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Kennesaw State softball team fell 2-1 to Atlantic Sun Conference leader USC Upstate in the first of two scheduled games against the Spartans as the second contest was halted due to weather in the top of third inning on a rainy Friday afternoon (April 18) at Cyrill Softball Stadium.

KSU drops to 22-25 overall and 11-11 in the A-Sun after the game one loss, while Upstate improves to 40-5 and 19-2 in the conference standings.

Junior Natalie Rhodes opened the scoring in game one in the top of the third as she registered an RBI single to right center to plate sophomore Missy Perkowski from third base for an early 1-0 KSU lead.

The Spartans responded with a run in the bottom of the third on a RBI double to center field, before breaking the 1-1 tie an inning later on a bases loaded walk after a walk and two hits put runners on base.

The Owls made things interesting in the top of the seventh as Perkowski delivered a two-out single to left center, before senior Carly Van Auken earned a walk to put runners at first and second, but neither runner advanced as the Spartans went on for the 2-1 win.

Senior pitcher Amanda Henderson (17-9) took the game one loss despite only giving up two runs on five hits, while striking out seven in a complete game effort.

KSU totaled three hits, with Perkowski going 1-of-2 with a run for the Owls and Rhodes posting a hit and an RBI in the setback.

Lexi Shubert (17-1) earned the win for Upstate, who got a hit and two RBI from Maddison Kieffer.

KSU again picked up the early 1-0 lead in game two with three-straight hits in the top of the second, capped off by an RBI single through the left side from redshirt-freshman Courtney Sutter.

The contest was then halted heading into the top of the third due to a steady down pour of rain, with play set to resume tomorrow, Saturday, April 19 starting at 3 p.m. ET. The final game of the three-game series will then begin 30 minutes following the conclusion of the halted game.
