SB: Owls Fall in Doubleheader to UAB

Van Auken Leads KSU with Two Hits, an RBI and a Run on the Day

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Kennesaw State softball team dropped back-to-back contests to UAB at the UAB Softball Field on Tuesday afternoon (April15), falling 7-1 in game one and 5-1 in game two.

The losses dropped the Owls to 22-24 on the year, while the Blazers improve to 26-19 on the season.

It was a pitcher's duel to open the first three innings of game one as neither team could produce a run until the Owls plated the game's first score on a RBI single by junior Natalie Rhodes.

The Blazers would score four runs in the bottom of the fourth, coming on a pair of RBI hits and a fielder's choice.

The Owls threatened with two singles in the top of the fifth, but were unable to get the runners home.

The Blazers struck for three more runs in the bottom of the sixth, capitalizing on four hits and a Kennesaw State fielding error.

The Owls totaled seven hits in the game, with Rhodes leading the way for the Owls with two hits and an RBI.

Junior pitcher Paige Matthews (4-12) took the loss in game one for the Owls, surrendered six hits and gave up four runs over three innings. Sophomore Morgan Sikes would pitch the final three innings in relief for the Owls.

Lannah Campbel (10-8) pitched six strong innings to pick up the win for UAB, going six innings and only giving up one run while striking out 10

In game two, both teams threatened in each of the first two innings, but neither team could find a way to bring home a run. 

The Blazers scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning, before adding another run in the fourth on a RBI double. UAB then plated its final three runs off three hits in the fifth inning.

The Owls scored their loan run of the game in the top of the seventh inning when senior Carly Van Auken belted a solo home run to right field, her second of the season and third long ball as an Owl.

Freshman Logan Viers (1-3) took the loss for the Owls in game two, giving up five runs in four and a third innings of work.

Logan Streetman (17-10) struck out twelve over six innings and surrendered three hits to pick up the win for the Blazers.

KSU next travels to Spartanburg, S.C., to face USC Upstate in a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series on Friday and Saturday, April 18 and 19. The Owls and the Spartans will play a doubleheader on Friday starting at 2 p.m. ET, followed by a single game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
