GAME ONE BOX SCORE (XML) | GAME ONE BOX SCORE (PDF) | GAME TWO BOX SCORE (XML) | GAME TWO BOX SCORE (PDF) KENNESAW, Ga. – It was a total team effort as the Kennesaw State softball combined pitching and hitting for back-to-back shutout wins over Stetson on a warm and sunny Saturday afternoon (April 12) at Bailey Park. KSU registered a 3-0 win in game one, before earning a 4-0 victory in game two.
"We got two big wins over Stetson today," said head coach
Wes Holly, Jr. "It is always a good match up with us and them and I am very proud of the team. They put hitting and pitching in the same game, both games and that is how you win ball games right there."
The Owls, who have now won four-straight games, improve to 22-21 on the season and 11-9 in Atlantic Sun Conference action, while the Hatters drop to 28-8 and 12-4 in the conference standings.
KSU opened the scoring in the day's first game as sophomore
Courtney Sutter led off the third inning with her team-leading 11th double of the year. Sophomore pinch runner
Rachel Dennis then advanced to third on a single through the right side from senior
Carly Van Auken, before coming home on a Hatter error as Van Auken stole second.
The Owls added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth as senior
Angie Dascoli started off the inning with a double to left center field and was plated by a single to right field from sophomore
Kara Chambers. Chambers would come home two batters later as Hatter centerfielder Chrissy Morello dropped a fly ball, allowing the sophomore to score from second base.
Senior pitcher
Amanda Henderson worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth before recording a three-up, three-down seventh inning to earn the 3-0 win.
Henderson (16-8) struck out six while only giving up five hits in a complete game effort.
KSU totaled seven hits in the contest, with junior
Natalie Rhodes posting a pair of hits for the Owls.
Sophomore
Megan Veringa got the Owls going early in game two as she delivered a two-RBI single to center field to score Rhodes and freshman
Taylor Denton to put KSU up 2-0 in the bottom of the first.
Sutter then pushed the lead to 3-0 in the very next inning as she tied the team lead for home runs with a blast over the left field fence, her fifth of the season.
Sophomore
Missy Perkowski closed out the KSU scoring with a run in the third on a RBI single through the left side to plate Dascoli from third as the Owls scored in their third-consecutive inning.
Junior pitcher
Paige Mathews (4-10) did the rest as she did not give up a walk and allowed just three runs while striking out two in seven scoreless innings of work.
KSU put up eight hits in game two, with Sutter leading the Owls with a 2-of-3 performance plus an RBI and a run. Dascoli added a pair of hits and a run in the win.
Sarah Read (10-2) took the game two loss for the Hatters.
The Owls and the Hatters will wrap up the three-game series on Sunday, April 13 at Bailey Park as the Owls go for the sweep. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. ET.
