KENNESAW, Ga. – A seventh-inning rally by the Kennesaw State softball team came up just short as the Owls suffered a tough 1-0 loss to visiting North Florida in Atlantic Sun Conference play Sunday afternoon at Bailey Park in Kennesaw.
Â
The Owls (10-10, 2-1) had the potential tying run thrown out at the plate for the second out of seventh inning and North Florida's Kayla Goff was able to record the final out and help the Ospreys (16-7, 2-4) salvage the series finale.
Â
Trailing 1-0 in the seventh inning, Kennesaw State mounted a rally as senior
Sara Sikes walked to open the inning. After sophomore
Courtney Sutter reached on a fielder's choice and sophomore
Megan Veringa walked, senior pinch-hitter
Bianca Durant singled to center field.
Â
Sutter attempted to score from second base on Durant's hit and was thrown out the plate.
Â
The loss overshadowed a strong outing by junior right-hander Paige Mathews (0-3), who pitched seven innings, allowed one hit, walked seven and struck out three.
Â
Three of those bases on balls came in the sixth inning and led to the game's only run when Abby Tewey hit a one-out sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to drive home a run and give North Florida a 1-0 lead.
Â
Kaylie Wallace (6-3) started for the Ospreys and earned the win after working six-plus inning, allowing four hits and two walks.
Â
Junior left fielder
Natalie Rhodes had two of those four hits as she singled in the fourth and doubled in the sixth.
Â
Kennesaw State returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Mississippi State in a non-conference game on Tuesday at Bailey Park beginning at 5 p.m. ET.
